The basic rules of poker are: the “rules”, the Betting phases, and the Buy-ins. Having a good hand at any given time is referred to as the “nuts” in poker. A straight is the best possible hand at any given moment if you have trip sevens, and an 8-9 is the best straight if you have two different suits of cards. There are many other rules in poker, but these will be discussed later.
Rules
Poker rules are managed by the professional Tournament Directors Association, or Poker TDA. It was founded by poker professionals Linda Johnson, Matt Savage, and David Lamb, and now has more than 2,500 members from 63 countries. Every two years, it meets for a summit, where the rules of the game are discussed. WSOP Tournament Director Jack Effel serves on the board. Below are some of the important rules for poker:

Common poker terms
Poker has many different terminology. In this glossary, you will learn the meaning of common poker terms, including ante, blind, range, and suited. Ante is the small amount that players have to set aside prior to a hand. The blind player sits to the left of the dealer button, or “the button.”
Buy-ins
Buy-ins are an important aspect of poker. In general, they represent your money and act as a line of defense. As an example, a person who buys in for $40 is likely to win $200 if they have a straight flush. A player with a smaller stack will typically win more than three times their buy-in, so the amount of money they spend on their buy-in will be a fraction of what they win.
Variants
There are many different variations of poker. In some versions, players can use one card from each suit, forming a straight flush. In others, they can buy extra cards to make an eight-card hand. In many cases, a poker variant was inspired by an actual game played at home. For instance, the Chicago variant, featured in the movie Rounders, involves a single player betting half the pot on the highest-ranking spade. Another variant is the Southern Cross, where community cards are arranged in a cross and a player may only use one direction of the cross when making their hand.
Bluffing
Bluffing in poker can be a successful strategy, especially if you are aware of the odds. There are three different types of bluffs: partial bluff, full bluff, and zero equity pips. Each has its own unique advantages and disadvantages. This guide will cover the various types of bluffs and explain how to use them in the game of poker. After reading this guide, you should be able to use them wisely to increase your odds of winning a hand.
